Dr. Denise Smith is the Founder and President of The Center for Vision Development.

While she is an optometrist by trade, she is an optimist at heart and has devoted her entire career to diagnosing and treating functional visual disorders that negatively affect people's lives.

She believes that no matter how difficult or complex things are, there is always something that can be done to make things better. As a Developmental Optometrist, she gives her patients options that they didn’t have before; that they didn’t even know existed.

Dr. Smith is a native Texan and received her Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Texas at Austin. She graduated with honors from Nova Southeastern University College of Optometry and is a member of Beta Sigma Kappa International Optometric Honor Society.

She completed a post-doctorate clinical residency in Pediatric Optometry and Vision Therapy Rehabilitation at the State University of New York in New York City in 2002 then headed back to Texas with a new outlook on vision. Soon after her return to Austin, her dream of opening a visionary practice dedicated to the specialties of developmental, pediatric, and neuro-optometry became a reality when she founded The Center for Vision Development in 2004, and she has never looked back.

As such, she received "The Advancement of Neuro-Optometric Rehabilitation Award" from The Neuro-Optometric Rehabilitation Association (NORA) in 2014.

Dr. Smith has a passion for helping people with special needs and served as the Clinical Director of the Texas Special Olympics Lions Club International Opening Eyes program which allowed her to provide quality eye care to Special Olympics athletes in Texas and Mexico who otherwise may not have received necessary visual aid.

Dr. Smith is a published author and seasoned lecturer. She is a member of the Optometric Vision Development and Rehabilitation Association (OVDRA), the Optometric Extension Program Foundation, the Neuro-Optometric Rehabilitation Association (NORA), and the College of Syntonic Optometry (CSO).

Dr. Smith lives in Austin with her husband, Patrick, and her son, Waterford. Her favorite things (besides vision therapy) include the beach, the spa, Longhorn football, and most of all being a mom!

How she sees it: “Excellence is the result of caring more than others think is wise, risking more than others think is safe, dreaming more than others think is practical, and expecting more than others think is possible.” - Anonymous

Dr. Olivia Browne is the Clinical Director and a Practicing Optometrist at The Center for Vision Development. Known for her compassion and gentle approach, she adds unique knowledge and personal experience to the team.

With appreciation for the difference that optometry has made in her own personal life, she is driven and passionate about providing that same level of care to others. Dr. Browne grew up in a small suburb on the south side of Chicago.

She received her Bachelor of Arts degree from Butler University in Indianapolis, and then decided it was time to venture out of the Midwest. She moved to San Antonio and graduated from the University of the Incarnate Word Rosenberg School of Optometry, where she was awarded the COVD Excellence in Vision Therapy Award.

She completed a post-doctorate clinical residency in Oregon at Pacific University College of Optometry specializing in pediatrics, vision therapy, and neuro-optometric rehabilitation.

While she enjoyed the hiking and scenery during her time in Oregon, she was eager to return to Texas to apply what she had learned (and to get some sunshine!).

When she is not at CVD, Dr. Browne loves spending time with her family, reading, and playing piano.

How she sees it: "Perfection is not attainable. But if we chase perfection, we can catch excellence." - Vince Lombardi

If you get migraines, talk to them about light therapy. I've had one migraine in over a 6 month period! I was having them every weekend. It's worth at least calling them to get more information. I was so sick a year ago and I was just accepting that my life was just like that. It's not. I'm hosting 2 events and attending 4 parties in the next 2 weeks. Last year I was in bed exhausted every day. Call them! They're nice people and if there's a chance they can help you, it's worth the call.

The team here is amazing! They are so personable and encouraging. I always have a good experience during my therapy sessions even when it can be exhausting or challenging. I’ve also seen so much improvement in my eye turn, with double vision, control and everything. I will add that vision therapy is not cheap but if needed it’s 100% worth it and worth doing at The Cemter for Vision Development.

I’m a life long teacher, but up until this year, I had never heard of vision therapy. That being said, The Center for Vision Development has been incredibly supportive and accommodating for our family, and we are so grateful for them! Truly every person that works there is kind, thoughtful, and thorough. My son is only 4, so I was worried that he wouldn’t want to attend sessions or the experience might be overwhelming. I was so wrong! Visiting his “eye teachers,” Sophie and Josh, are his favorite part of the week! Dr. Olivia Browne was incredibly informative as she explained the results of my son’s testing. She went above and beyond to make sure we understood the diagnosis and the treatment plan. In fact, her explanation was so thorough, I was able to apply what I had learned to students on my class. I’m not going to sugar coat it, vision therapy testing and sessions are expensive. However, after referring a student and consulting with their parent, I was able to see that tests are very individualized. My son’s issues and testing were very different…as were the costs. This conveyed to me that they don’t order the same evaluations for everyone. They only test and recommend what will work for you or your child. It is far from one-size fits all. As a teacher, we don’t have the extra money for this, and they did everything they could to only test what was necessary. The front staff was incredibly helpful and we were able to figure out a way for my son to get what he needs without us taking on extra debt. We got tons of supplies to work on skills at home, and they sent large packets both to my husband and I and my son’s teachers so we can all understand how my son sees the world. They truly go all out to support you on your vision journey. We have so much love for The Center for Vision Development!

My 12-year-old daughter has really benefited from vision therapy at the Center for Vision Development. From PreK-5th grade, she always struggled in school and struggled to complete school assignments in a timely manner. During those years, all of her teachers told me that she was very easily distracted, didn't stay on task, and didn't focus in class. She started vision therapy in 5th grade, and from 6th grade on, she has thrived in school. She is in 7th grade now, and earlier this month, I received an email from one of her teachers that said that my daughter "is always on task!" That is the exact opposite type of comments I used to hear about her. What a difference! She can see the difference in herself too :)

CVD and all of the staff are amazing! I have worked with all of the vision therapists, and they are so kind and passionate about helping each patient reach their goals. Vision therapy is a great way to address the root causes of eye conditions in a non-invasive and often more effective way than surgery. Would totally recommend CVD!
