Neal Adams, MD is a nationally-recognized leader in the field of retina. He is highly experienced and expertly skilled.


He is the former Chairman of the Department of Ophthalmology at the Paul L. Foster School of Medicine at the Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center. Prior to his position in Texas he was Chief of the Division of Visual Physiology at the Wilmer Eye Institute of the Johns Hopkins Hospital, Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine.


Dr. Adams earned his Bachelors in Chemistry from Yale University and his M.D. from Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. He is a graduate of the Johns Hopkins Hospital’s Wilmer Eye Institute Residency Program. Following completion of a Retina Fellowship at Wilmer, he was selected to join the Faculty at Johns Hopkins and honored with Johns Hopkins Wilmer Eye Institute's highest award to a junior faculty member:  the Maumenee Scholar. He was then selected as Chief of the Division of Visual Physiology. Dr. Adams is Board-Certified in ophthalmology.


Dr. Adams has received many honors as a highly skilled surgeon and clinician. He has been elected to Who's Who in the World. He also devotes time to research endeavors focused on retinal disorders. Dr. Adams has coined a new category of retinal degenerations, called the "retinal ciliopathies."


He is currently Editor-in-Chief of the ophthalmic journal, Eye Reports, which is a peer-reviewed scientific medical journal. Dr. Adams is author of numerous scientific publications, as well as author of the book, Healthy Vision. He has appeared on ABC, CBS, and Fox News programs. His expert analysis has appeared in papers across the country, including The Washington Post, The New York Times, and The Boston Globe, as well as in a US News & World Report's Good Vision Guide.

Joshua K. Fernandes, MD  is a Board-Certified, Fellowship-trained Ophthalmologist, specializing in diseases and surgery of the retina, vitreous, and macula. In addition to providing general eye care, he specializes in treating conditions such as diabetic eye disease, macular degeneration, retinal detachment/tears, macular hole, eye trauma, and many other complex eye diseases.


Dr. Fernandes grew up in Louisiana, where he earned his undergraduate degree with honors from Tulane University. He then attended medical school at George Washington University, which is where he fell in love with the Washington, D.C. metropolitan area. He subsequently completed an internal medicine internship at St. Luke’s-Roosevelt Hospital (affiliate of Columbia University) in New York City, followed by an ophthalmology residency at the University of Chicago, where he served as Chief Resident. Lastly, he completed a prestigious two-year fellowship in vitreoretinal disease and surgery with world-renowned retina specialists at Northwestern University in Chicago.


Dr. Fernandes was inspired to pursue a career in ophthalmology in part by his mother, who went blind due to a retinal disorder during his early childhood. Despite her disability, his mother was the founding director of the Louisiana Center for the Blind, where Dr. Fernandes has spent countless hours working with the blind and visually impaired. From these experiences, he developed a passion for helping those with eye disease.


Dr. Fernandes has been engaged in research with numerous publications and presentations at national meetings. His honors include selection as a Howard Hughes Medical Institute Research Scholar for which he spent a year conducting research at the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, MD. He is a member of the American Academy of Ophthalmology, American Society of Retina Specialists, and the Washington DC Metropolitan Ophthalmological Society.

Gerald Rogell, MD is a Board-Certified vitreoretinal specialist with extensive experience in retinal conditions. He is highly skilled and has a 40+ year history of top reviews by his patients. His patients rate him highly in his expertise as well as compassionate care. 

 

Following undergraduate at Harvard University, Dr. Rogell earned his medical degree from Harvard Medical School and then completed his residency and fellowship in vitreoretinal surgery at the Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary of the Harvard Medical School. He received additional research training at the Howe Laboratory of Ophthalmology at Harvard Medical School where he developed his expertise in retinal circulation. He completed a Heed Ophthalmic Fellowship. He also completed an additional fellowship in Endocrinology, Diabetes, and Metabolism at the world-renowned Joslin Diabetes Center of the Harvard Medical School.

 

He is a former faculty at multiple prestigious institutions including Harvard Medical School, Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, Georgetown University Medical Center and George Washington University School of Medicine, and ran his own successful private retina practice prior to joining DC Retina. He is the former President of the Maryland Society of Eye Physicians and Surgeons, former Board Member of the Washington National Eye Center, and former Board Member of the American Diabetes Association of Washington, DC. He has published numerous leading reports on laser treatment for diabetic retinopathy and received honors and awards for his innovations and contributions to the understanding and treatment of retinal disease.
