Our Team
Dr. Ismail Shalaby, M.D., PhD
Ismail Shalaby, M.D., Ph.D. is a Board-Certified ophthalmologist and cataract surgeon at Levin Eyecare. Dr. Shalaby uses the most advanced and up to date techniques in cataract surgery including LASER ASSISTED, Clear Cornea Topical (no injection) no stitch surgery. He uses the most advanced lens implants to achieve GLASSES FREE OUTCOMES AFTER CATARACT SURGERY. Dr. Shalaby is also trained to manage and treat a range of other eye conditions, including Glaucoma, diabetic eye disease, dry eye disease, and age-related macular degeneration.
EXPERIENCE
Dr. Shalaby earned his Doctor of Medicine at The Johns Hopkins School of Medicine and then finished his ophthalmology residency at the Jonas Friedenwald Eye Institute at the University of Maryland. He also earned his PhD in Pharmacology from The University of Chicago.
In addition to his experience and training, Dr. Shalaby is also certified to utilize the latest advancements in glaucoma treatment by using micro-stents in combination with cataract surgery. He is also a dry eye specialist and has earned a certification from the Dry Eye Center of Excellence to use intense pulsed light (IPL) therapy to treat and manage dry eye symptoms that are caused by blockage of the meibomian glands.
Dr. Shalaby is a Clinical Assistant Professor of Ophthalmology at the University of Maryland where he teaches Residents and Medical students Ophthalmology. He is also involved in Clinical Research and has published over 80 Papers and Abstracts, as well as Books and Book Chapters.
Dr. Richard Gruen, M.D.
Richard Gruen, M.D., is an experienced eye surgeon at Levin Eyecare. He is especially talented at performing glaucoma and cataract surgery.
EXPERIENCE
Dr. Gruen earned his medical degree from the University of Maryland School of Medicine and completed his residency in ophthalmology at Sinai Hospital. Afterwards, he completed an Anterior Segment and YAG Laser fellowship at St. Luke’s Cataract & IOL Clinic in New Port Richie, Florida. He’s worked in private practice ever since, practicing in the Pikesville and Owings Mill area for more than 35 years, including as owner of the Gruen Eye Center in Owings Mills.
Dr. Eric Walker, O.D.
Eric Y. Walker, O.D., is an exceptional eye doctor at Levin Eyecare. He provides detailed and compassionate care to patients in our Perry Hall, Glyndon, and Pikeville, MD, offices!
EXPERIENCE
In 1982, Dr. Walker earned a bachelor’s degree in biology from Western Maryland College. He received his Bachelor of Vision Science and Doctor of Optometry degrees from the Pennsylvania College of Optometry at Salus University in 1986. Dr. Walker’s professional journey encompassed a two-year tenure at Sears Optical, followed by a remarkable 25-year ownership and operation of his independent practice, Randallstown Family Eyecare. His extensive background includes a distinguished service period in the United States Navy, during which he was honored with the Navy Distinguished Service Medal for his exceptional contributions.
Dr. Tania Marcic, M.D.
Tania Marcic, M.D., is a skilled and dedicated eye surgeon at Levin Eyecare. She provides a wide range of ophthalmic services, including glaucoma and cataract surgery and macular degeneration treatment.
EXPERIENCE
Dr. Marcic received her medical degree from Albany Medical College and then finished an internship at Mount Sinai at Elmhurst Hospital Center. She then completed her residency in ophthalmology at St. Vincent Catholic Medical Centers in Queens, New York. She completed her training with a subspecialty fellowship in glaucoma at George Washington University.
Dr. Carley Ward, O.D.
Dr. Carley Ward is the newest member of the Levin Eyecare doctors team, serving patients at our Pikesville, Glyndon, and Parkville offices. As a trusted eye doctor in Maryland, she delivers precise, whole-person care—from children’s first check-ups to advanced management of chronic conditions. Her reputation as a family eye care specialist stems from her commitment to listening first, explaining clearly, and tailoring every exam to the individual.

Raised in Lakeside Park, KY, Dr. Ward earned a Bachelor of Science in Biology from the University of Louisville (2017). She completed her Doctor of Optometry degree at the Illinois College of Optometry (2021), where she honed skills in primary care, contact lenses, and ocular disease diagnosis. Eager to deepen her clinical breadth, she pursued an Ocular Disease Residency at the Baltimore VA Medical Center (2022), treating glaucoma, diabetic retinopathy, macular degeneration, and other sight-threatening conditions. Today, she brings that medical perspective—and a friendly chairside manner—to every appointment at Levin Eyecare.
Outside the clinic, you’ll find Dr. Ward exploring Maryland’s parks, reading a good novel, or relaxing with family and friends.
Dr. Michael Sandler, M.D.
Michael Sander, M.D., is a skilled ophthalmologist at Levin Eyecare who sees patients at our Pikesville and Glyndon locations. He offers a wide range of ophthalmology services, including management of eye diseases, such as glaucoma and macular degeneration, and retina and cataract treatment.
A Baltimore native, Dr. Sandler finished his undergraduate studies at the University of Maryland, graduating magna cum laude. He earned his Doctor of Medicine from the University of Maryland School of Medicine, interning at Maryland General Hospital. He finished his residency program at the University of Maryland and is Board Certified by the American Board of Ophthalmology. He is regarded as a leader in the field of Ophthalmology.
Dr. Jamie Choi, M.D.
Dr. Choi earned her medical degree from Virginia Commonwealth University and completed her ophthalmology residency at the University of Maryland Medical Center, where she served as academic chief. She then completed a cornea fellowship at the University of Maryland, focusing on corneal surgery and transplantation.
In addition to her clinical expertise, Dr. Choi has authored numerous scientific articles and book chapters and has presented her work nationally, contributing to advancements in ophthalmic care. She combines precision, evidence-based medicine, and compassionate, patient-centered care to ensure that every patient understands their options and receives the best possible outcomes.
