Success Story #1 -- A letter from a parent
Dear Dr. Susan Tesch,
I thought I would write you a letter which perhaps would be helpful to share with your future patients. I'm also writing to thank you for all the hard work, encouragement and support we received from you. Thank you!
During the latter part of our son's Kindergarten year, I was called in to visit with his teacher. She had noticed that he was having some difficulties with focusing and attention. She suggested that we look into and, possibly, have our son tested for A.D.D. and that medication would perhaps be something that would be right for him. Somehow, I knew in my heart that this was not something our child had.
Dr. Whelan had spoken with my husband previously telling him that he has an eye condition which could have been been fixed when he was a child. He advised us to be very watchful of our children regarding any signs that might indicate that they might have the same condition. So, after my meeting with our son's teacher, I called Dr. Whelan who set up an appointment for us with Dr. Tesch. Dr. Whelan said that we were very lucky to have Dr. Tesch in the area (instead of having to travel to the cities once a week for eye appointments). At the time, we didn't realize how very lucky we really were.
After the initial eye exam, Dr. Tesch suggested that Vision Therapy would be beneficial for our son. It was very scary, but you want to do what is best for your children and, if you think a treatment or therapy can help, it is at least worth a try. It is difficult to track our son's progress in a lot of areas because he was so very young and it probably took us a little longer to complete. We tried to make it as fun as possible and Dr. Tesch was very helpful with this. We also tried to set attainable goals.
It was not always easy -- at times, my son cried -- at times, I cried -- but, things that are worth striving for are not always easy. So, simply checking off items on your standard Vision Therapy report did not seem to do justice to the gratitude we feel for where our son is today. I would say that, at the end of his vision therapy, not only did he pass eye tests that had previously been above his level, he also passed (some with flying colors) tests that were not even attempted 8 or 9 months before when we were just beginning the vision therapy.
Our son is now in the 2nd grade and he has no difficulties in school. He started reading in the middle of 1st grade and took off like crazy. He is reading books that are at or above his reading level. He participates in a reading program at school that is for advanced readers. He simply loves to read and reads for fun all the time.
I strongly believe that nothing is more important academically than a great ability to read and Dr. Tesch helped our son to achieve this. How amazing! I would recommend Vision Therapy to you, if Dr. Tesch suggests that it would help your child.
Sincerely,
Wendy Selmo, Solway, MN

We have noted improvements in reading, Lye now reads on his own, is happier at school and enjoying it. Lyles teacher told me that my son needed to be on medication [ritalin]. "It was the difference between success and failure." Well, thank God that you were here to help my son so that he was not band-aided with meds. This program gave the proper treatment so that he will be successful in life. Thanks to all of you for a job well done!

When Heather first came here, her grades and behavior were getting bad! She was really moody about school and saying that she could not do it. But, Vision Therapy was good for her. Her grades went from D's to the B honor roll. She now reads for fun and is a lot happier than she was. This is a very good program. Keep up the good work!

Through our sons Vision therapy, we have seen improvements in reading, comprehension, reading for fun, less sleepy while reading, fewer headaches, improved self confidence, improved concentration, and improved self esteem.
His history before Vision Therapy:
When we saw our sons low reading score on a standardized test, we literally freaked out. How could this be when his teachers had not said anything was unusual? I had noticed that his eyes watered and he rubbed them a lot when he read. He also had a tough time recognizing the same word in a sentence. When I took him for an eye exam and explained that he got headaches when he read, I thought for sure we had solved the problem. However, his report came back stating he had 20/20 vision. His 2nd grade teacher noticed that Caleb had trouble staying within a line when reading and recommended a visit with Dr. Tesch. This proved to be what Caleb needed!
After Vision Therapy:
When Caleb was tested again in the spring after months of Vision Therapy, his scores jumped. He went from being in the first percentile to slightly above the average in a matter of six months! He still has work to do and practice in reading but we now understand his trouble and can work with him. Thanks for making a difference.
