What is a domain name?
A domain name functions as a unique electronic address for a website on the internet. For example, the web address of a company named XYZ might be the domain name: www.xyz.com or www.xyz.org. There are now many other tags available, such as .info, .biz, .us, .pro, etc.

If you are take advantage of the free shared hosting which is included, at no additional charge, as part of the annual membership fee, you will be sharing the domain name optometrists.org with the other members in our network and will not need to add on a domain name/web hosting package.

How can I get my own domain name?
Please note that Optometrists Network manages domain name registration for its members only. Upon request, we take care of all the steps of registering a domain name for a current member, (i.e., www.currentmember.com). We will manage execute the administrative and billing roles (Administrative Contact and Billing Contact) and you will be the owner (Registrant) of the domain name.

Please note that if you use the our Free Bonus Template Website Design, we require that we take care of the domain name registration and web hosting, too. We need to have access to our copyrighted content at all times. In addition, we periodically make significant updates to the templates and you will want to be included in those upgrades.

If you have a custom website designed by a third-party vendor, you can register and host whereever and with whomever you choose. If you give us access to your third-party web hosting account, we will do our best to add some of our patient education links to your third-party site. This would be a professional courtesy and because we do not have control over a third-party website, we can not guarantee results.

In order to put your domain name into use as a website, you will also have to start a web hosting account.

How much does domain name registration cost?
We collect the registration fee and process all electronic documents for the convenience of our members. We charge $35.00 per year and bill in two year increments. The bill for US $70.00 will come directly from Optometrists Network. We never outsource this. A bill bearing any other business name is an unsolicited sales offer.

Be aware that you will need to be on the look-out for phony invoices or expiration notices. There is still some "slamming" going on in the domain name registration market (similar to long distance telephone companies long ago). Many companies send out misleading sales notices which appear to be legitimate invoices, but are not. When in doubt, pick up the phone and call the person who is handling your domain name registration.

What is web hosting?
A domain name must point to its own physical space on the Internet. With web hosting, you are leasing physical space and web resources on a web server. A web server is a computer which is configured to serve up web pages AND is connected to the Internet for this purpose. Web hosting fees can be categorized as utility leasing fees.

What is included in the web hosting account? Web hosting covers internet utilities only, as follows:

  • FTP access

  • Email forwarding for @yourdomainname email.
Please note that Optometrists Network has now partnered with BXB Secure Inc. for other secure email solutions. For secure HIPPAA compliant domain name email, go to HIPAA Compliant Email and Patient Forms with BXB Secure

  • 99.9% reliability and uptime. Your website will be available 24 hours a day. Redundancy and backup insures that your website will not "go down."

  • Fast download speeds. High-speed bandwidth is supplied by multiple data line connections to three national internet backbones: Digex, UUnet and SAVVIS.

How much does web hosting cost?
Optometrists Network no longer provides fee-for-service web hosting contracts. Web hosting are now bundled into the membership services contract. 30 days written notice of intent to cancel/move web hosting is still required. Our 30 days advance written notice of cancellation policy is required for all services we provide.

Monthly Rates for Temporary Extension of Web Hosting - Cancellation of your annual ontract after November 1: $35.00 per month automatic debit to your credit card.

Can I reserve a domain name without starting a web hosting account?
Yes, but registration fees will still be due and the name will have to point to a temporary Optometrists Network page until you are ready to use it.

Can I have more than one domain name leading to my website?
Yes, you can have more than one domain name pointing to one web hosting account, so the extra costs of having more than one name pointing to the same website are minimal.

My domain name is currently hosted with another service. Can I transfer it to your service?
Yes. As the accountholder and/or registrant (owner) of the domain name, you will need to authorize the move. Please call us at 877-878-9540 to discuss the details.

What if I've reserved a name and haven't done anything with it yet?
If you are ready to use this name, if possible, please locate your current domain name account information, then give us a telephone call to discuss your options at 877-878-9540.

I have the free shared hosting, e.g., www.optometrists.org/myname. Can I upgrade to a domain name?
You can upgrade to a domain name at any time. We will register the name, set-up your new domain name hosting account, and move your website to your new location. All links to your website within our network will be updated. A forwarding utliity will be installed at your former address/location.

If I already have a domain name website elsewhere, can I join the network for the links and referrals only?
Absolutely. Many do! If you already have a happy relationship with another web designer or internet service provider, by all means, carry on! Our primary mission is to make optometrists findable and visible on the Web. Your links in our network of patient education content can lead to any web address.

If you build it... will they come?
