What's my vision?
This is the most common question that my patients ask me about themselves. The question that they're really asking is "what's my visual acuity?" Although it's nice to know if you see 20/20, it really isn't that critical for good school performance. In fact, most of my patients see 20/20 and yet they have serious vision problems.
Visual acuity is a measurement of your eyesight when viewing black letters on a white background twenty feet away. Most of our viewing takes place at much closer distances, for example, when reading (I haven't met many people with arms that are twenty feet long!). We must focus, track and coordinate our eyes at this close distance and extract meaningful information. Our vision includes all of these visual skills. Many people are not functioning to their full potential in school, on the job or when playing sports due to poor vision (not visual acuity). I do not only examine your eyesight (your ability to see clearly) but I also evaluate your vision (your ability to efficiently interpret and understand what you see).

- Sensorimotor evaluation -- an in-depth investigation of your ability to focus your eyes, team your eyes and move your eyes (tracking). This is one of the few offices that utilizes the Visagraph II, a computerized device that records and analyzes your eye movements while you read.
- Visual perceptual evaluation -- determines if you are able to properly derive meaning from what you see. Based upon what you see, can you understand it and direct your muscles accordingly?
- Sports vision evaluation -- a thorough examination of the skills needed in sports (depth perception, dynamic visual acuity, eye hand coordination, etc.) This office is the only one in the area that uses the Acuvision 1000 (see photo at right) for eye hand coordination, tracking and peripheral awareness.
- Neuro optometric evaluation -- for the unique visual deficits associated with congenital and acquired neurological conditions due to disease, stroke or head trauma. Dr. Lack is the Director of Vision Services at the Northeast Center for Special Care in Lake Katrine.
