Dr. Dan Lack What's my vision?

This is the most common question that my patients ask me about themselves. The question that they're really asking is "what's my visual acuity?" Although it's nice to know if you see 20/20, it really isn't that critical for good school performance. In fact, most of my patients see 20/20 and yet they have serious vision problems.

Visual acuity is a measurement of your eyesight when viewing black letters on a white background twenty feet away. Most of our viewing takes place at much closer distances, for example, when reading (I haven't met many people with arms that are twenty feet long!). We must focus, track and coordinate our eyes at this close distance and extract meaningful information. Our vision includes all of these visual skills. Many people are not functioning to their full potential in school, on the job or when playing sports due to poor vision (not visual acuity). I do not only examine your eyesight (your ability to see clearly) but I also evaluate your vision (your ability to efficiently interpret and understand what you see).
